Hungarian Author László Krasznahorkai Receives Nobel Award in Literary Arts

László Krasznahorkai has awarded the prestigious Nobel in Literature.

The Magyar writer was celebrated "for his compelling and prophetic body of work that, during apocalyptic fear, confirms the strength of creative expression."

The author has authored five books and garnered numerous additional literary awards, such as the 2015 Man Booker International Prize, and the 2013 best translated novel prize in Narrative for his first book Satantango, a contemporary piece concerning the conclusion of the globe.

He is the next Magyar author to receive the prize after the late Imre Kertesz, who was awarded in 2002.

Born in 1954, the author earned acclaim in the mid-1980s when he published Satantango, which he adapted for the movies in 1994.

The b&w film, by Magyar director Bela Tarr, is famous for its 7-hour running time.

Krasznahorkai's additional books comprise:

The award body portrayed him as "an great epic writer in the Central European tradition that reaches by way of Franz Kafka to Thomas Bernhard, and is defined by absurdist themes and bizarre overindulgence."

His 2021 book Herscht 07769 has been labeled as a great modern Deutsch novel, because of its exactness in illustrating the country's societal upheaval just before the global health crisis.

It is a portrayal of a contemporary small town in Thüringen, the Federal Republic of Germany, afflicted by social anarchy, homicide and arson.

"Gentle titan Florian is an orphan, taken in by a radical who has mentored him as a street art eraser.

"His employer, a Bach fanatic, is furious that an individual is applying wolf symbols across the statues to the famed composer in their east German municipality."

One critique remarked it as "therefore bleak from start to end."

His newest satirical work, Zsömle Odavan, reverts to the Hungarian setting.

The main character is elderly Uncle Kada, who has a confidential entitlement to the throne but has taken extreme measures to vanish from the world.
